TYPES OF MINI LAVA LAMP
Mini lava lamps come in all sorts of shapes, colors, and styles. Here are some of the most popular types:
MINI LAVA LAMPS SUITABLE FOR A KID'S ROOM
The original Lava Lamp was considered too dangerous for a children's room due to the high temperatures they could reach. Little hands could get burnt on the metal base, or the glass could get too hot to touch. Thankfully, there are now mini lava lamps that are safe for kids to use.
When choosing a mini Lava Lamp for kids, make sure you pick a battery-operated LED one. These lava lamps are made from durable, shatterproof plastic and use safe LED lights. They're also much cooler to the touch than the original lava lamps, so you don't have to worry about little fingers getting burnt.
Lava lamps make a great addition to any child's room. The calming effect of the slowly moving blob of wax can help your child relax at bedtime. And since lava lamps come in all sorts of fun colors and styles, they can also double as a nightlight.

The Original Lava Lamp Inventor
'Astro' Lamp 1963
WHO INVENTED THE LAVA LAMP?
The lava lamp was invented in 1963 by British engineer Edward Craven Walker. He was inspired by an egg timer that used lava-like wax to measure the time it took to boil an egg.
Walker eventually created his own version of the lava lamp and started a company called Mathmos. The lava lamps made by Mathmos are still popular today and are considered some of the best lava lamps on the market.
Original lamps from the 1960s are highly coveted by lava lamp collectors and can sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. So, if you come across an old lava lamp at a garage sale, you could be sitting on a gold mine!
THE ORIGINAL 'ASTRO LAMP' IS STILL GOING STRONG
The lava lamp has come a long way since it was first invented. But the original design from Mathmos is still going strong today. The Astro Lamp is an exact replica of the very first lava lamp ever made. It’s even made in the same factory in England using the same methods and materials.
The price tag on the Astro Lamp is a bit hefty, but you’re paying for quality. These lava lamps are built to last. You can pick up the original design for around $100 (£85) on Amazon.
WHAT’S IN A LAVA LAMP?
Lava lamps are made up of a few simple parts: a glass jar, a metal base, a light bulb, and lava.
The lava is actually a wax-like substance that is denser than the surrounding liquid. This causes the lava to sink to the bottom of the lamp when it is cold.
When the lava is heated by the light bulb, it becomes less dense and starts to rise to the top of the jar. As the lava cools, it sinks back down to the bottom, and the cycle starts all over again.
Lava lamps are mesmerizing to watch and can provide a relaxing atmosphere in any room. The exact ingredients for the water, wax and oil used in the original Mathmos lava lamps are closely guarded secrets.
